High on a mountain, tens of millions of butterflies are asleep on the firs, wings folded, waiting for the sun.

Monarchs
Michoacán · every winter
Every autumn, monarchs born across Canada and the United States fly as far as 4,000 km south, to a few mountaintops in central Mexico and a forest none of them has ever seen. In March they turn north again, and it takes three or four generations to get back to Canada. Then the great-great-grandchildren make the whole journey south in one go. Their forests are protected today as the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
