Glass is a liquid that forgot to finish freezing. Ordinary window glass is mostly silica from sand, melted with soda and lime so it flows at a reachable temperature, then cooled fast enough that crystals do not have time to grow. The result is an amorphous solid: rigid, transparent, and without the grain of a true crystal. That disorder is why glass shatters in curved shells instead of splitting along neat planes, and why it can be clear if the mix is clean.

People have made glass for thousands of years, first as beads and small vessels, later as windows when blowers learned to spin discs or blow cylinders and flatten them. Modern float glass is poured onto a bath of molten tin, so both surfaces come out smooth without grinding. Adding other oxides changes color and behavior. Iron tints green. Cobalt goes blue. Lead makes crystal heavy and bright. Boron yields glass that can take heat without cracking.

Glass is chemically stubborn. Water weathers it only slowly. Recycled cullet melts more easily than raw sand, which is why bottle banks matter. Fiber optics are glass drawn into hair-thin rods that carry light around the world. A material born in desert sand and furnace heat now holds buildings, screens, and the quiet paths of telephone voices. Transparency, in this case, is a failure of order.
