Silk begins as a liquid protein. The silkworm, larva of the moth Bombyx mori, spins it into a continuous filament to build a cocoon. Inside that shell the animal intends to become a moth. People intervene. Cocoons are harvested, often before the moth cuts the thread, then soaked and unwound. A single cocoon can yield hundreds or thousands of meters of fiber, extremely fine, strong for its weight, and able to take dye with a quiet sheen. Several filaments are twisted together to make a thread that can be woven.

The industry started in China thousands of years ago and spread along trade routes so slowly and so jealously that silk itself became a map of contact between East and West. Mulberry leaves feed the worms. The work is seasonal, tactile, and historically full of women’s labor in homes and workshops. Wild silks from other moths exist, rougher and less uniform. Modern factories still depend on the same animal and the same tree.

Silk is protein, like hair and wool, so it burns differently from cotton or polyester and it can be damaged by moths of another kind, by sweat, and by sun. It is not magic cloth. It is a farmed secretion, an insect’s emergency house turned into clothing, parachutes, and surgical thread. The luxury is the length of the unbroken line and the patience required to steal it intact.
